Intel Core i7 980X: 12 Logical Cores

intel-i7-ee It took them 15 months, but Intel’s first real update to the LGA 1366 product line is starting to materialize. The folks at Anandtech have their hands on the latest addition to the Extremely Expensive series, the “Gulftown” 6-core behemoth. Its performance is impressive, but I was particularly amused at the following in their conclusion:

“If you're the type of user who always buys the Extreme Edition knowing that you can get better bang for your buck further down the lineup, this time you're actually getting your money's worth.”

The new flagship CPU also sports a new tower-style OEM heatsink/fan.

  1. dodecalogical… cores…

  2. It’s possible that Intel will release lower binned “Gulftown” chips at slower clocks for the masses… we mortals might have to wait until then to consider putting these in our systems.

  3. My what a big heat sink you have.

  4. technology: there is no way to keep up
